I’m exploring the concept of implementing a “Leadership Development” award at my company. Over the last few years, we’ve put a lot of emphasis on leadership development, yet at our yearly management conference, all of the awards are for business results (best client satisfaction, best client retention, revenue, etc…). We’d like to recognize those managers that are “doing the best” with leadership development.

Has anyone ever done this or something similar? I’m interested in criteria, measures, process, logistics, etc…

Thanks.

My experience with award programs has not been positive. For every winner, there are many losers and somehow the criteria for determining the awards gets muddled with politics and popularity. Another problem is that each person has different needs for recognition - some folks crave public recognition and others prefer a more personal approach. I had better results by infusing leadership competencies into the peformance management process and training managers on how to stroke their people for demonstrating good leadership on a daily basis.
I just gave a keynote presentation at an awards ceremony that was pretty much what you're looking to do. Please send me an email (jason@seidenleadership.com) with the info above that I can fwd to my contact there, and I'll try to make a match for you.
Thanks, Jason. I just sent you an email.
Well, as Ron said, selecting one winner may lead to many more losers. This might not have a positive impact of the work environment. But what if you ask your employees to vote and choose their winner, rather than the management doing it? It would be a transparent procedure then, and won’t lead to any heart breaks. And what’s more, if this approach helps in the growth of your company, you can also enroll yourself for HR awards and get your policy recognized. Like, for this year, our company has enrolled for the SAIL HR Awards at http://sailhrawards.com/sail/ to benchmark the innovative HR policies that our company has adopted.
Hey! Even I have heard of the SAIL HR Awards. I think it’s a positive step taken by SAIL and IIM-A to have set-up this award. It’ll give the Indian HR industry a good boost, especially for the manufacturing sector. We should have more such initiatives taken by the Indian HR fraternity, to discuss the challenges faced by the industry and also to recognize each others efforts.
