Delivering HR Strategy is the key challenge in the downturn

In this challenging economy there is more that needs to be done by the HR department than brush up on redundancy rules. All too often, the day-to-day process of running HR means that strategic work is overlooked or shifted lower down the ‘to-do’ list. More than ever HR needs to be responsive to the changing economic conditions and add value to the organisation. The top three areas for HR to focus on in order to support its organisation are managing talent, improving HR Operating models, and… Continue

Mirror, Mirror....

Has it ever occured to anyone else that HR professionals love the sound of their own voice? I have witnessed the death of many HR collegues' credibility as they seemed to have diarehha of the mouth. At times, their verbal comments added value however as they seemed to runneth over with the mouth, I watch their credibility slip away in the eyes of their business partners.

What I have learned about this is that:

a) I don't want to be viewed as a Master BS artist

b) I am more… Continue

Innovation through Inclusion

If you need innovation (and I think you probably do), you need diversity.

For more and more organizations in more and more industries, creativity and innovation are rapidly becoming the best new opportunity for establishing competitive advantage. This is no big secret as there is a great deal of writing, talking, buzz-wording, best-practicing and shouting about innovation today. Innovation is also coming to be viewed as increasingly important to education, non-profit and… Continue

Recognition: Missing the ‘Soft’ Levers

Don Lowman wrote a couple of interesting posts “The Power of Thank You” and “Expressing Informed Admiration”. I know that there is a general consensus that recognition is a powerful motivator, but I feel it is quite an under-utilized tool in the people-managers’ toolkit. Managers and leaders sometimes have a tendency to get so “busy”… Continue

Employee Engagement Report - BlessingWhite

I haven’t heard of the firm Blessing White, but I saw that they have published a report on Employee Engagement based on a multi-country study.

Download “2008-employee-engagement-report-blessing-white”

While the sample size of 7500 looks small for a multi-country study, the report tries to make a business case for employee engagement. Another interesting thing… Continue

Being from...Neptune

from OurTimeToAct.com

Evelyn Rodriguez has a great post this morning on her blog, based on a quote that I love:

"Either you repeat the same conventional doctrines everybody is saying, or else you say something true, and it will sound like it's from Neptune."

- Noam Chomsky

I love this quote, because it is a good… Continue

Human Capital in Uncertain Times

Well a lot has been written and debated about the role of HR Director, Human Resources in these uncertain times due to the impact of the constraints on financial resources of corporations. I'm schoked to see that one year back how much was being printed about the significance of Human Capital, Value of People, Talent Management etc. In contrast, now the buzz is that 2009 will be the year of the CFOs and HR's role would be to merely survive or try to survive during these times.I also hear HR… Continue
